A & J Fabtech is sponsoring the Signalling & Telecommunications category at the UK Rail Industry Awards 2017, to be held on the evening of 9 February at one of London’s most exciting venues, Battersea Evolution.

Many signalling and telecommunications installations on the UK rail network feature steel overhead line electrification, beams and anchor booms as well as bridges, walkways and gantries by A & J Fabtech; hence the company’s excitement at being able to recognise some of the best recent projects.

Andrew Shedden Commercial and Sales Manager of A & J Fabtech explains the importance of recognising the work of engineers in this area: “Without signalling and telecommunications, the traffic on the rail network can’t safely and effectively carry passengers and freight from one destination to another. Signalling and telecommunications allow millions of journeys to be made every single day; without it the rail network would simply not be able to run.”

Entrants for the Award include:

  • Linbrooke Services – CIS Display Equipment
Linbrooke was contracted to design, test and install over 200 innovative new CIS screens across four London stations as part of the Thameslink programme, in order to display a greater wealth of passenger information and facilitate embarkations.

  • Metrolink RATP Dev – Reducing Electromagnetic Interference
Metrolink’s S&T team developed a bespoke technical solution, built in-house, to address the issue of electromagnetic interference affecting the new TMS, thus reducing alarms into the Network Management Centre by 99.9%.

  • Network Rail – East Notts Modular Signalling Project
This project achieved its aims of reducing operating costs, renewing aged infrastructure and improving safety by installing seven, modernised level crossings and a state-of-the-art modular signalling system.

  • Northern Hub Alliance – Major Signalling Framework efficiencies
The Alliance is supporting investment in Manchester through efficiencies such as LED signals, lightweight structures, plug-and-play equipment and axle counter detection, as well as using Siemens technology that will feed into the city’s Ordsall Chord project.

  • SNC-Lavalin Rail & Transit Ltd – SSiFT v3 - SNC
Lavalin developed a modernised Signal Sighting Form Tool (SSiFT v3) for Network Rail that allows designers to quickly create sighting forms through a more intuitive user interface, resulting in significant savings in time and cost.

The judging criteria will include assessment of many aspects of each project, including: aims and objectives, planning and execution, innovation and creativity, outcomes achieved and overall benefits. The judging panel is highly distinguished and includes university professors, directors and senior staff of major rail industry organisations, MPs and representatives from engineering institutions.

The evening is set to be a glittering affair and will include a sumptuous dinner, live music and considerable opportunity to network with fellow industry professionals. The event will be hosted by actor and TV personality Stephen Mangan and the keynote speech will be given by Sir Peter Hendy, Chairman of Network Rail.

Andrew Shedden Commercial and Sales Manager “It should be an evening to remember, partly for the fun and bonhomie and more seriously for its recognition of the exemplary work being done by committed railway engineers and managers across the country.”
