For high-speed passenger elevators in high rise buildings and skyscrapers, selecting an optimum braking solution can be a challenge. Variance in load and speed, the comfort of occupants and the importance of reliability is brought to the fore – which is why Twiflex Ltd has provided end users with a fully engineered solution. The VKSD-FL, a spring applied hydraulically released stopping brake, provides a low maintenance and long-life option that can be customised to suit specific elevator demands. Furthermore, the device has been designed for ease of installation and maintenance in confined areas.

The VKSD-FL modular disc brake provides up to 119kN braking force as standard, offering reliability over 2 million cycles due to a high spring fatigue life. This performance ensures reduced running costs and extended service intervals.

One of the unique advantages of the VKSD-FL is its ease of installation and setting. This is partly enabled by the unique ‘parked off’ feature; a maintenance state in which the pads are adjusted clear of the disc face (permitting easy lining replacement) and the spring pack is at its free length. No hydraulic pressure is present in the brake, allowing maintenance to be carried out without the risk of injury from stored energy. The result is greatly improved safety for maintenance personnel during brake setting, adjustment or pad replacement.

Furthermore, maintenance can be conducted with standard hand tools and without dismounting the calliper, which is of great benefit when working in the confined spaces of elevator machine rooms. The VKSD-FL’s inherently compact construction also enhances these credentials.

Twiflex Ltd., part of Altra Industrial Motion Corporation, has always positioned itself as a provider of custom solutions, which is reflected in the versatility within the VKSD-FL range. End users can specify the VKSD-FL-VR variant, which offers an increased brake pad area for high-energy stops in elevators with higher payloads. For those looking for a standard brake as opposed to a floating configuration, the VKSD and VKSD-VR are available in the range, offering similar benefits.

While offering exceptional performance as standard, the VKSD-FL can be customised to suit specific application demands. Paint, protective coatings, finishes, brake status and pad-wear monitoring can be specified as options, but Twiflex can also fundamentally redesign certain aspects of the unit to address elevator challenges.

In addition, Twiflex offers a full turnkey service regarding industrial brakes, offering in-house expertise regarding callipers, pedestals, mounting brackets, power units, discs and couplings. Entirely new clean sheet design can even be originated on request. Ultimately, end users can be sure of an integrated approach and a single source for addressing all braking concerns.
