A three-way trading partnership formed over 50 years ago between a haulier, one of its customers and one of suppliers is still going strong and has been the foundation of the haulier’s success.

AJA Smith Transport is celebrating five decades of supply from Edbro, having bought hydraulic wet kits, each one comprising of a hydraulic tipping cylinder, power pack, reservoir and controls, from them since the haulage company was formed in 1968. That was also the year that it began working for aggregates company Marshalls.

Founded in Great Harwood, Lancashire by Tony Smith and now run by his son Anthony, AJA has a fleet of aggregate tipper lorries, all of which are fitted with Edbro hydraulics.

“Dad started the company with a regular contract delivering aggregates all over the North West for Marshalls of Halifax, and it has grown from there,” says Anthony. “His original truck was fitted with an Edbro lifting cylinder and it performed faultlessly for the entire working life of the truck. This made Edbro a favourite supplier and he turned to them every time he expanded the fleet or bought replacement vehicles.”

Edbro was founded over 100 years ago when it developed the first ever hoist to be powered by a truck engine. Since then, it has grown by constantly developing cutting-edge innovations in on-vehicle technologies. Today, it is a world leader in the manufacture of systems, modules and components for commercial vehicles, and maintains its position at the forefront of the tipping market by working to steadily increase payloads, reduce tipping times and provide “fit and forget” solutions that require little or no servicing over their entire working life.

Edbro joined the JOST World in 2012, a move which has allowed it to expand and enhance its reputation further. Located in Bolton, less than 20 miles from AJA, Edbro now exports over 75% of its production around the world. It not only supplies lifting systems for aggregate trucks, but also front end, underbody and ejector cylinders, waste handling equipment and customised hydraulic kit solutions for virtually any type of vehicle.

Its range of tipping cylinders includes hydraulic cylinders for trailer applications, combined ram and tank solutions for rigid truck applications, twin ram underbody hoists for crane and tipper applications and single ram cylinders for underbody tipping three-way applications. In order to meet the almost infinite number of different customer requirements, Edbro has developed customisable kit solutions based on standard and specially designed components including hydraulic valves, pneumatic controls, piston and gear pumps, PTOs and oil tanks.

Over the last half-century AJA has probably bought 700-1000 wet kits from Edbro as it has expanded and modernised its fleet of trucks. Anthony says that in the past the company ran its vehicles for two years before replacing them, but as trucks have increased in reliability, and new forms of finance have become available, it is now standard practice to run them for five years.

“The Edbro wet kits were always reliable and never let us down when we ran vehicles for two years, and the same has proven true now that we keep them for five.” says Anthony. “Wet kits are at the heart of our success and after 50 years we know we can rely on Edbro for back-up and service as well as for reliable equipment.”

He also states that at times AJA has bought trucks pre-fitted with other makes of hydraulics, but they have never matched the performance of Edbro kits, nor have they come with the local technical support that they can rely on from Edbro.

“Together with Marshalls, AJA and Edbro must be one of the most enduring partnerships in the UK Haulage industry,” concludes Anthony.
