Like many of the family run firms that are the life’s blood of the UK commercial transport network, T&J Haulage started from humble beginnings and has grown into a successful national fleet. Part of its success can be attributed to its commitment to specifying the most reliable components possible for its vehicles. For the last 15 years it has exclusively been using JOST axle systems – a design that could travel around the world 50 times.

T&J Haulage was set up in 1982 by Ted and Judy Walker with a single vehicle, to be joined in later years by sons Richard and Trevor; today it is run by their son Trevor and is going from strength to strength.

It specialises in bulk haulage, predominantly serving the aggregate and agricultural industries and covers the length and breadth of the country from its main base in Clitheroe, Lancashire, with support from satellite depots in Newark.

T&J is expanding, having recently moved into a larger headquarters facility and taken on extra staff. Its fleet now stands at 30 state-of-the-art tipper trucks, all of which are fitted with on-board weighing systems so that loading and unloading are as quick and efficient as possible and accurate records are easily maintained.

Enabling efficiency has been a key component in T&J’s ongoing development, so it makes as much use as possible of equipment that is easy to work with and reliable in the long term.

In the early 2000s it fitted some of its tipper trailers with JOST axle systems (previously Mercedes-Benz TrailerAxleSystems) and found that they suited the company’s operations and procedures so well that they have stuck with them ever since.

“We like the ease with which they can be serviced,” says Trevor. “It is a straightforward job to change the brake discs and pads. Serviceability seems to have been designed into the whole system, so that inspection, maintenance and repairs are all quick and simple.”

He also notes that JOST axle systems are supremely reliable, so it is company policy to fit them to the whole fleet and keep them for the life of the truck, which is typically 10 years. Each of T&J vehicles does 130,000 miles or more a year, so that is a million miles over 10 years of operations – or 50 times around the world.

As one of the world’s leading axle manufacturers, JOST supplies to many different makes and models of commercial trucks and trailers. To meet all the different requirements this throws up JOST has developed a modular range of axle components which can be assembled in different configurations so that each axle system exactly meets the needs of each application. This means there are many possible specification and performance possibilities, yet the maintenance and servicing requirements are met with a relatively small number of components and fitting procedures.

Based on an almost robust fabricated construction, the axles are designed to be outstandingly stable at all times: under heavy loads, at high speeds, in poor weather and during hard braking. They are also the lightest axles in their class, allowing increased loads to be carried on each run, and - as T&J have found – are quick and easy to service.

All this leads to lower operating costs and one-stop maintenance for axle and suspension, and hydraulic cylinder vehicle capabilities optimised to their specific duties and, ultimately, lower full life cycle costs for the operators.

Trevor sums up: “As hauliers of heavy loads, safety has to be our paramount concern. As business people responsible for maintaining people‘s jobs we need reliability and efficiency from our equipment. Our 15 year partnership with JOST is testament to the similarity of our outlooks.”
