Hylec-APL provide ‘Perfect’ EMC radiation shielding for electrical communication right through to the terminal

With the increase in industrial communication systems and many devices now with their own onboard processing and comms capability, every little sensor and mechanical operation can be reporting back to a factory wide automation system as well as a local machine control systems, often by wireless comms. This increase in comms activity means many systems are now at a greater risk to EMI inside enclosures and cabinets, this can now be combated by using a new design of EMC cable gland from Hylec-APL.

Electrical power cables which carry large currents to equipment can produce EMI radiation which is normally compensated for in sensitive environments by using shielded cable. Inside an enclosure or cabinet however this radiation can become a problem again - a cable that has had its shield removed from the point of entry of cabinet or enclosure in order to ground through a conventional EMC cable gland can radiate EMI inside the enclosure and be harmful to sensitive components thereby affecting the signal data and causing a malfunction or total breakdown of the machine or production line.

“Often EMC shielding of a cable is only available up to the cable gland, after which the power cable will not be protected, Hylec-APL has introduced a new range of cable gland (the ‘Perfect’ EMVD style) that allows the protection to carry straight through the bulkhead to the component or terminal.”

Terry Spriggs, Hylec-APL Marketing Manager ‘Hylec-APL is committed to providing versatile and unique solutions for its customers. We have many years experience advising customers on the importance of selecting the correct cable gland. Most EMC cable glands provide protection up to the cable entry point. With the ‘Perfect’ EMVD cable gland sensitive equipment is protected, right through to the heart of the machine’.

As factory’s become more automated, communication systems are increasing. Increased use of data comms means that there needs to be a greater consideration of the effect EMC from power cables may have. Some cable comms are light based and are virtually impervious to EMI radiation, but the majority of factory based bus systems are still electrical signals such as MoD bus rtu, CANbus, Profibus and Ethernet. There are many other embedded signals in devices around the work place, these comm systems are found in offices as well as factory floors. All these electrical signals are susceptible to EMI radiation.

As well as being harmful to operating systems EMI radiation can also be dangerous for people who are exposed to it for long periods of time. The latest EMC directives ensure that EMI radiation is kept to a minimum wherever possible. The directives cover fixed installations and apparatus, it is essential to have protection where EMI could pose a risk.

Unlike conventional shielding glands Hylec-APL’s new range provides a secure and reliable entry and allows the metal braid shielding the cable to continue through the bulkhead/cabinet directly to the component/terminal. This ensures that the cable is totally EMC shielded and that all factory equipment is fully protected from all electrical noise at each stage of communication.

The cable glands are designed to accommodate a range of sizes of cable, the range can hold cable sizes from Ø 5-42mm. Each gland size provides a wide clamping range which reduces the number of types required to be carried. The glands are brass nickel plated, incorporating a rubber O ring, providing water and dust protection to IP68. The ‘Perfect’ EMVD Cable Glands then are able to provide maximum protection from dust and water while also providing an aesthetically pleasing entry point with high cable retention.
