JONES & SHIPMAN SHOWS TECHMASTER HIGH-PRECISION SURFACE GRINDING MACHINE AT MACH 2008.

Jones & Shipman, the UK’s foremost precision grinding machine manufacturer, is showing its latest high precision, but easy to control, high capacity surface grinding machine at MACH 2008.

Designed for use in toolrooms and mould making facilities, the heavy duty TechMaster 844 offers high, speed, high capacity, high precision grinding combined with Jones & Shipman’s class-leading Touchscreen control. Offering 800mm x 400mm grinding capacity with a vertical capacity of 360mm under a new grinding wheel. The TechMaster is highly accurate, very stiff and has a high metal removal rate.

Key to the ease of use and productivity of the new machine is Jones & Shipman’s proprietary software that removes the requirement for operators to input code, instead providing a highly flexible icon-based user interface. Built around a GE-Fanuc® Touchscreen the Easy Control system reduces the time needed for operator training and dramatically cuts set-up and changeover time. The system still provides access all the functionality of a conventional CNC, however, allowing the TechMaster to be operated with maximum productivity and minimum cycle times.

While it may be easier to use, the TechMaster 844 uses rigid construction and innovative design to deliver maximum precision to its operations. Generously proportioned machine bed, column, saddle and table castings offer maximum rigidity in use. The direct drive wheelhead assembly contains a hardened and precision ground spindle that rotates in precision angular contact, rolling element bearings that are sealed and lubricated for life. The wheelhead slide moves vertically on widely spaced Turcite coated slides providing sensitivity, precision and rigidity. The table and saddle slideways are hand scraped, Turcite coated and automatically lubricated to ensure low friction. Both Y and Z axes are controlled and positioned by GE-Fanuc® Digital AC servo motors, while the table axis is hydraulically powered from a modular power pack.

Productivity and ease of use are further maximised by the machine’s Dress on Demand Feature. This allows straight of formed wheel dressing to be carried out at the touch of a button at any point in the machine’s cycle. If carried out mid-cycle, the machine will automatically return to its last position and continue grinding after the dressing procedure. Dressing can be also be scheduled to take place automatically before or after every grind cycle.

The TechMaster 844 is one of four machines on show by Jones & Shipman at MACH 2008. The others are Suprema and Ultramat cylindrical grinding machines and a Dominator Creepfeed grinding machine. Complementing the Jones & Shipman exhibits will be a display of Gear, Rotor and Thread ground components all produced on the World Leading and Award Winning Holroyd high speed Helical milling and Helical Thread and Gear grinding machines. Also featured will be a display of the all-new 5 axis XL superabrasive grind-mill machining system with its 20 paired station toolchanger.
