Klarius turns British racing green…

Klarius has designed a race series catalytic converter which will keep emissions low but the power high.

Klarius, manufacturers of the well-known TIMAX brand of replacement exhausts and catalytic converters (CATs) in the UK and sponsors of the Ma5da Racing Championship, has developed a racing CAT which will dramatically reduce harmful emissions without adversely affecting the performance of the car. Unlike road cars, racing cars are not required by law to have a catalytic converter fitted; most cats will reduce a cars power which is unsuitable for racing. With the new racing CATs Klarius is hoping to prove that Britain can lead the way in green gracing.

The racing catalytic converter has been developed to work with a customised exhaust system that Klarius has also designed for use with a domestic Mazda MX5 racing championship. The CATs and exhausts draw on the design and manufacture expertise of the mass produced products from Klarius’ well known brands, such as TIMAX and are constructed using light weight and highly corrosion resistant materials.

The Klarius TIMAX racing CAT is believed to be the first commercially available, race developed catalytic converter for road car based race series. The CAT has been designed to effectively reduce emissions whilst avoiding any power loss and could be used for a host of other road car based racing vehicles. Anyone interested in talking to Klarius about developing a unit for another model or car can contact the UK sales team directly.

The current recipient of the first series racing CAT from Klarius TIMAX is the Ma5da MX5 Championship which has a grid in excess of 40 registered cars for the 2009 season. A full 20 race calendar is being run over 9 rounds on the UK’s top race circuits. The series is receiving full Motors TV and Channel 5 televised coverage of every race, and full hospitality for all teams. The championship is fast becoming an established and popular series having been named as the fastest growing single make championship of 2009

Simon McAlpine, Ma5da Championship event director: “We are extremely proud of the success that the Ma5da series has enjoyed. We want the series to be a flagship for what motor racing can and should be. Working with Klarius gives us the unique opportunity to be the first racing championship based on road cars to utilise racing catalytic converters. At the moment there are so many environmental worries and we think that it is a positive message that we can provide a greener championship without affecting the quality of the racing at all.”

The racing CATs are being supplied in a package with a new CAT-back exhaust system for the Ma5da cars; this is also providing environmental benefits and better performance. Compared to a hand-built exhaust from a small supplier, there is a significant weight saving, and a performance advantage, as the back pressure is balanced very precisely on every system. Klarius also control noise very carefully, in the system they have designed and manufactured for the Ma5da series this means the cars have better performance without breaking any of the noise limits on tracks around the UK.
