Exhaust news, Ma5da racing gets VIP treatment from Timax…
Timax one of UK’s largest exhaust manufacturers and a specialist in aftermarket replacement systems has designed a full cat-less system just for us.
We have Doug Bentley - Technical Centre Manager UK for Klarius, the group company that owns UK replacement exhaust brand Timax, and Tony Brassington, fellow MX5 fan and cat replacement Design Engineer at Klarius, for our new custom built exhaust system.
Tony, who designs four new Klarius catalytic converters every week, first contacted Ma5da racing to ask about spares for the soft top mechanism on his beloved vehicle, after a quick conversation about where he worked, and a word with the boss, he produced a cat replacement down pipe for the race cars, and very handy that was too. Since then (and we have Doug Bentley to thank for this) Klarius has built a Timax branded stainless pipe system and replacement back box that meets noise regs and is very easy to fit; the performance is, well “very good” shall we say, and the noise it makes is even better.
The guys have also designed-in a new mounting spigot with the system that gives an additional mid-point anchor for the exhaust, providing a much more secure system when gravel traps are looming. They are at pains to point out that it is not a road legal system, this is important as Timax produces road legal replacements systems for virtually every popular car on the road today that is over two years old; you may well have had one fitted without knowing it.
Klarius is the only UK replacement manufacturer to gain full type approval for every (road legal) exhaust they make which includes emissions, noise and carefully balanced back pressure. The noise and back pressure were very carefully evaluated for the new Ma5da system, but of course to maximise performance, the smoother flow through this system is definitely noticeable at the pedal.
There is road car manufacturing technology in there though; When Klarius is developing a road car system, it will use the same process of optimising all the elements of the system, but in order to generate better economy and a lot less noise. The type approval process ensures a quality system that will match and even improve on the OE manufacturer’s original system.
The difference between Timax and other replacement brands in the road car sense is that a better quality system such as a Timax one will actually save fuel too, independent tests are being carried out now to find out exactly how much is saved, but it is safe to say that a type approved Timax exhaust will pay for itself several times over in Fuel savings over the life of the exhaust.
The new system means that competition MX5 owners will now not have to cut-and-shut a standard pipe system to fit a sports back box, because all the pipes and flanges (and mounts – including the extra one) fit perfectly. No surprise since Klarius has two huge plants in the UK where hundreds of new replacement exhausts and cats are designed, jigged and manufactured in large numbers every year.
The new system includes a full flow optimised system from the manifold back, but it is modular so you can have just a cat replacement down pipe, a front pipe, or a cat-back pipe and back-box on their own. An ECU map tweak might help power a little, but isn’t essential and the system is tested to 96dB.
A word from our sponsor; Klarius Group and the Timax brand have agreed to sponsor the last Ma5da race of the season at Brands on 7th and 8th November 2008, and are in negotiations about next years series sponsorship. Look out for the Klarius and Timax banners and decals for the cars.
…Ends…
