The contract for the supply of a turnkey medium voltage (MV) Electrical Balance of Plant solution for a new waste-to-energy (WTE) facility in Flintshire, North Wales has been awarded to Mitsubishi Electric. The scope of the project includes engineering, installation and commissioning services.

With the capability to process 200,000 tonnes per annum of post-recycled municipal solid waste, the facility will have a generating capacity of around 19 MW of clean, sustainable energy to meet the equivalent needs of over 30,000 homes and businesses.

Built on a former steelworks at the Deeside Industrial Park in Flintshire, the new energy recovery facility has been named Wheelabrator Parc Adfer, with Adfer being Welsh for ‘recover’. Trial-runs are scheduled to begin in August, with subsequent client acceptance and take-over of the facility anticipated in October 2019.

The contract was awarded to Mitsubishi Electric by French industrial engineering contractor CNIM SA, after it in-turn was commissioned by US waste-to-energy specialist Wheelabrator Technologies to construct its fourth WTE facility in the UK. Adding to a worldwide total of 26 facilities, 19 of them being WTE plants, three of which are currently under construction.

Mitsubishi Electric will act as the main MV Electrical Balance of Plant contractor, suppling 11kV medium voltage switchgear, power and distribution transformers, PLC hardware, HMIs and associated cabling, as well as providing project management and engineering services.

Morteza Seraj, Director Process Automation of Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V. commented, “The customer team was looking for a reliable single-source supplier for the MV Electrical Balance of Plant, to reduce the number of companies they had to interface with on the project. This brought the project risk down to a minimum from their perspective and yet ensured the highest levels of quality. Through extensive collaboration on the project, they were convinced that working with Mitsubishi Electric would achieve the outcome they were looking for. We feel that this success is owed to an accurate understanding of the market and customer requirements, resulting in good preparation and timely responses. Our turnkey solution also included the use of local resources, combining the benefits to the customer of our national presence and agility, with the technology leadership and resourcefulness of a global player.”
