30 years is a long time. In that period a lot has changed; the introduction of smartphones, the rise of the global economy and the dawn of the internet age. However, for Thorn Lighting, a renowned manufacturer of commercial indoor and outdoor lighting, one thing hasn’t changed: Optimas Solutions still provides the fasteners they need to enable their market leading lighting solutions in the UK.

Thorn Lighting can trace its roots back to 1928, and now operates with an annual turnover of over €1 billion. The business has a worldwide footprint with 324 locations globally, providing the highest standard in dependable, efficient, high-quality lighting. Its extensive portfolio of indoor and outdoor lighting is developed to address the needs of wholesalers, contractors, specifiers and end users, for the widest range of applications. Thorn’s name is recognised throughout the world as standing for quality, reliability and ease of use. Thorn is also a Smart City specialist, helping municipalities improve safety and wellbeing through connectivity and intelligence. In indoor lighting, Thorn’s innovative solutions create comfortable, efficient light for living and working. Optimas, a global distributor and service provider for fasteners and c-class components, has been a partner of Thorn’s for last 30 years now, supplying quality parts that add to the known quality standards of Thorn.

Kevin Rowell, Business Unit Sales Manager at Optimas, was there from the very start of the relationship: “We were initially called in 1989 to help consolidate the 27 suppliers Thorn was utilising into a single source, which would improve logistical efficiency and fastener specification. This was to help support Thorn’s Spennymoor production facility, which is highly productive to this day. Thorn aims to support local businesses, so our proximity and ability to deliver what they needed were defining factors at the start of the relationship.”

However, the supplier consolidation was only the start of a service offering that would grow much larger, as Kevin explains: “Beyond consolidation, we now offer Thorn on-the-ground engineering support thanks to a dedicated Optimas team. This improves speed of response, which is key when the pressure of orders is transmitted down the supply chain. Typically, our experts will respond to Thorn’s particular fastener needs, either providing a standard component solution that can overcome an application challenge, or in some cases originating a custom part. This integrated engineering support really sets us apart, adding value to a manufacturer’s operations during component specification.”

Currently the Spennymoor facility manufactures in excess of 2.5 million light fittings every year. Relocated in 2011 to grow production capacity, the site means that Thorn UK can produce around 7,500 variants of light fittings for varying applications across the engineering spectrum.

Supporting an operation of this scale requires integrated delivery systems, which Kevin sheds some light on: “As well as standard deliveries, we operate a Kanban system onsite, which means that the optimum number of parts are available on the production line at any one time, forming the cornerstone of lean manufacturing. Currently, we have 242 parts live in the system, which amounts to a total of 42 million pieces delivered to the site per annum. These are delivered to 1,400 separate containers at 20 different locations, all supported by 25 dedicated Optimas Kanban racks. We aren’t just delivering standard fasteners either, we’re talking cable glands, grommets, electrical terminals, magnets and so on. Thankfully our local proximity means we can service these increasing needs with ease.”

The lighting industry can also be inherently challenging from a supply perspective. Outdoor lights especially tend to be replaced seasonally, which can cause spikes in demand which the supply chain must soak up. With a local inventory and personnel presence however, Optimas can take the strain.

“We visit the Spennymoor site 3 or 4 times a week, so we are in constant dialogue, working to further grow our service to further support Thorn’s success. This is a very well-established customer, with a strong track record, and is one of our longest standing business relationships. I think our flexibility of service and local approach has been a key aspect of keeping pace with this customer, so we can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
