Offsite building company, Totally Modular, will be showing its Micro Bungalow at Futurebuild 2019 (Stand E30, 5th-7th March, ExCel, London) and promoting its potential to relieve homelessness.

The Micro Bungalow is the smallest unit Totally Modular manufactures, but is built to the same high standards as its larger houses. Based on a strong steel frame and with a choice of external cladding styles, its construction uses only high-quality materials and exemplary workmanship. This ensures that the Micro Bungalow is hard-wearing and will provide comfortable accommodation for many years. The generous use of insulation and optimised design means both day-to-day running costs and total lifetime costs of ownership remain low.

The Micro Bungalow can be delivered to site using a standard lorry fitted with a modest-sized unloading crane, which helps minimise the time and cost of delivery. Importantly, the units can be individually sited to create detached, single storey houses or stacked to create apartment blocks.Offering over 18 square metres of internal accommodation, the internal layout of the Micro Bungalow maximises the amount of usable space and creates a bright and airy ambience. The main room is a combined living room and kitchenette. Next to this, in the middle of the unit, is the bathroom and moving to the other end of the unit is a generously sized double bedroom. Each room is fitted with appropriate furniture, equipment and fittings to provide comfortable living in a homely environment.

Each Micro Bungalow is fully plumbed for hot and cold water and wired for lighting and socket outlets. Like all Totally Modular housing units, they can be fitted with the company’s Eco Pack, which allows the easy addition of electric eco heating and a solar PV and battery system, enabling off-grid living for up to 10 months of the year and containing running costs to approximately £30 a year.

The Micro Bungalow is considered as a very cost effective solution that is ideal for assisting homeless people, because it gives them not only their own individual accommodation, but also a comfortable place to call home. This aids their self-esteem and so can play an important part in helping them establish a more settled lifestyle.

However, combatting homelessness is not the only role at which the Micro Bungalow excels. It is also ideal for providing temporary accommodation for workers in remote locations, such as major construction sites and infrastructure projects; for housing nurses and junior doctors on site at major hospitals and for many other jobs where housing must be provided quickly, and at a minimum cost.

Totally Modular is a supplier of residential housing solutions and other buildings, constructed using high-integrity modules engineered and built in its own factory facilities. It offers a range of building sizes, types and styles, which can provide benefits to tenants, owner-occupiers, developers and housing providers.

Futurebuild is promoted as the UK's single most important built environment event, offering an inspirational destination for forward-thinking professionals across the entire construction sector. It addresses real issues, including homelessness and the need to improve energy efficiency and highlights innovative solutions such as offsite building, waste minimisation and ecological building.
