The fact that initial lowest cost for a component or system often proves to be the most expensive in the longer term has resulted in a concentration across all sectors of industry on the issue of whole life costs. One of the largest producers of MDF and particleboard in Europe has compared the cost of ownership for several popular brands of roller chain over a three year period at one the company’s main production plants. The samples varied from the cheapest available through to the highest quality lube-free roller chains; each was compared in a simple wear test. The aim of the practical test was to establish figures for outright longevity in an arduous application on the ‘forming line’, an area of the board production process that had the highest turnover of chain.

Lube-free oil impregnated sintered roller chains and engineered plastic / stainless steel combination chains dispense with the need to use external lubricant and can extend the wear-life of conveyor equipment dramatically. Lube-free conveyor chains also protect food products and packaging from marking and contamination, and since food grade lubricant is expensive they can also reduce day-to-day operating costs.

High maintenance costs and poor reliability are often the result of improper selection and sizing of rolling bearings. When most engineering designers embark upon the task of specifying rolling bearings the chances are that they will not start with a clean piece of paper. In fact, in most cases, their selection will be based on what has gone before: the references provided by successful applications in pumps, transmissions, motors, and conveyors etc being too strong to ignore. Any variances from the established application norm will usually be of a peripheral nature, typically concerning sealing and lubricant selection.

British- manufactured split roller bearings (SRB) from Revolvo Ltd have recently saved millions of Rand in downtime for South African company, Xstrata Alloys, the world’s largest producer of ferrochrome and a leading producer of primary vanadium. Using SRB, Revolvo’s South African agent, OE Bearings, was able to temporarily fix a shaft, enabling Xstrata Alloys to avoid millions in lost revenue by remaining operational for a whole month while a new shaft was manufactured.

Continuing its recent success in providing large split roller bearings for use in ball mills, Revolvo has won an order from a cement plant in Thailand to supply two large split roller bearings worth a total of £40,000. One is a standard 850mm bore unit, and the second, a special 849mm bore bearing to cope with an undersize shaft. Revolvo won the order because of its willingness to manufacture the special size bearing, and for the overall design of its SRB unit, with a brass instead of aluminium cage, which was considered more durable in the demanding conditions.

NSK’s bearing substitution programme has saved a major producer of frozen food products £5,984 per year as a result of solving a problem of repeated heat-related bearing failures in a heat shrink tunnel used for packaging beef burgers. The failures, on a hot air circulation fan, were a major cause of concern to the food producer, as each time they resulted in costly downtime and lost production.
